It's...an emptiness. It burns...like hunger...I like it.

As soon as I read about the The Fan Art-isan Craft Contest!, which challenges crafters to combine fan art with artisan crafts, I knew that I had to take part. Fandom jewelry was what initially got me into crafting, after all!

RWBY is one of my favorite shows, and it's the series that inspired the greatest number of pieces in my gallery, with Pokemon being a close second. While I'm no stranger to weapon jewelry, this time, I wanted to challenge myself to try something new.

Cinder Fall and her multi-form bow/dual blades immediately came to mind as my inspiration. My first attempt to create a Cinder-inspired piece (below) didn't do the character justice - it was too simplistic for her design and personality. The piece was created over a year ago, and since then, I've acquired the skills needed to improve on the original.

Most of the weapons in RWBY are capable of transforming into multiple 'modes'. For example, the main protagonist, Ruby Rose, has a scythe (which I've crafted as well, shown below) that can transform into a rifle. I decided to make this piece a transformable weapon as well, creating my own take on the 'bow' and 'dual blades' mode of Cinder's weapon.

Each blade can be worn as its own pendant, and using the magnetic clasp, the blades can be combined to create the bow. To wear one of the blades, the wearer connects the blade's toggle bar to its corresponding loop. To wear the piece as a bow, they connect the toggle bar of the left blade's cord to the toggle loop of the right blade's cord, then by connecting the toggle loop of the left blade's cord to the toggle bar of the right blade's cord (doing this in the reverse order works as well).

This was one of the most challenging and fun pieces to craft so far, and quite nerve-wracking, since I wasn't sure if the materials would arrive on time! To create the piece, I shaped and hammered two pieces of silver-plated copper wire into the shape of Cinder's bow/blades, then attached them to the two halves of the magnetic clasp. I then reinforced the weapon(s) using enamel coated copper wire, choosing my colors and design based on Cinder's appearance, personality, and role in the story.

Bullet; Orange RWBY belongs to Monty Oum & Rooster Teeth. I don't own the character or the weapon that inspired this piece. The quote is from Volume 3, Chapter 7: Beginning of the End, where Cinder is shown using the original version of her weapon (later on, it changes into a different color and material, as shown here). The episode delves a bit into Cinder's backstory and is quite dark.

Bullet; Orange Materials: Silver Color Silver Plated Artistic Wire (18 gauge), Enamel Coated Copper Wire in Red, Vintage Bronze, and Black (20 - 26 gauge), Swarovski Bicone in Light Siam and Sunflower (4 and 6mm), Fire Crackle Glass Round Beads (4mm), Magnetic Clasp Connector.

Bullet; Orange Time: 2 days.

Bullet; Orange This photo is unaltered, save for the addition of the watermark, and was taken under natural lighting conditions.

Oh, very clever! I love how you’ve achieved the transforming capability of this weapon, and not only that, but kept it so sleek still – the magnet works perfectly with the design to the point where looking only at a single blade, I wouldn’t even know it was there.

I like how you’ve not tried to exactly mirror each blade as well. They’re very similar, but there’s enough intentional differences that it doesn’t turn into a ‘spot the difference’ game. I’m not familiar with the character or series to comment on how well your choices reflect the non-visual aspects of the character – but I can certainly see the influences of her outfit on your design. Either way, the red, gold, black and silver still make an appealing design even without knowing the character.

Your photography is quite nice too, with just enough background to keep it interesting without detracting from the piece. Perhaps a slightly cleaner background would help (looks like a kitchen worktop?), but that’s only noticeable when looking closely. Similarly, the top right photo stands out from the others with the focus and perspective making the background pattern larger and blurrier than the rest. But that’s just nit-picking. I like the red borders too, matching the main colour in the piece.

It would be nice to see the bow pendant stringing a bit more clearly. You describe it in your comments, but it’s not very clear to me – and the one image of the strung pendant as a bow has two strings, which doesn’t seem like what I’d expected.

Otherwise, my main feedback for the craftwork itself, is on the overall shape of the blades. I think from the screenshots I’ve found, the blades are a bit more curved than the straight lines you’ve used from the handle along the back edge. This means that when your pendants connect, they don’t quite have the curve I’d normally associate with a bow. I do recognise that the original weapon doesn’t curve much either, but I think a little bit more shape would really help the flow of this piece, building on the lovely curves of the inner design.

Overall though, this is a wonderfully clever concept, and very well executed. I don’t need to know anything about the original character for this to look good – but your description gives me some great background information, and I can certainly see the links. Very nice work!
